Introduction to Ceramides
Ceramides are a class of chemical molecules consisting of fatty acids and sphingosine bases. They are typical natural lipids and major components of esters in the extracellular matrix of the human epidermis. Through extensive research, hundreds of ceramides have been discovered, with 12 types found in the stratum corneum of our skin. Although the content of ceramides varies among individuals, the highest concentration is typically attributed to ceramide type III.
The lipid bilayers found between corneocytes, the cells of the stratum corneum, primarily consist of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. This double-layered lipid structure, comprising approximately 50% ceramides, 25% cholesterol, and 15% free fatty acids, plays a crucial role in maintaining the skin's protective barrier. This lipid structure is often referred to as the "brick and mortar model" of the skin barrier. The lipids act as mortar, while the corneocytes stack up like bricks, creating a robust defense system in the outermost layer of the skin.
A healthy and intact skin barrier serves as a vital protective mechanism against external irritants and moisture loss from within the skin. Ceramides are essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.
