Understanding Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide)

Vitamin B3 comes in two forms - Nicotinic Acid and Nicotinamide. It is primarily synthesized from the essential amino acid Tryptophan, which can be obtained from dietary sources like poultry, salmon, and red meat.

In the body, Nicotinic Acid is converted to Nicotinamide, which is an important enzyme cofactor.

For skincare, Nicotinamide is preferred over the more irritating Nicotinic Acid.

The key reason Nicotinamide is effective for the skin is its excellent skin penetration. Over 10% of topical doses can penetrate the skin, due to its small molecular size and non-charged properties, allowing it to work effectively in various formulations.

Generally, 2-5% concentrations can produce clinical effects, and Nicotinamide is well-tolerated even at higher long-term doses.
